Although the weather forecast for Sunday was not encouraging , forty three walkers joined the 4.5 mile walk from Canonbie.
The route took a path though the woodland at Byreburn. Two hundred years ago this area was mined for coal but few signs now remain of the industry and the beautiful woodland has many fine Douglas Firs.
The walkers stopped for a picnic near the Fairy Loup waterfall before proceeding past the site of Gilnockie Tower which was an Armstrong family fortress. After crossing the River Esk at Gilnockie the group returned to Canonbie past the church at Eskbank. Thankfully, although rain threatened, it stayed dry.
