Despite a horrendous weather forecast, 25 walkers who obviously had nothing better to do, set out from Gilsland on a 6 mile circular walk. Initially we followed the river Irthing, then across fields to Irthing House.
Soon we passed Wardrew House and squelched across more fields to Barron house farm. Then it was across more muddy open fields (open that is apart from herds of rampaging bullocks) to the ruins of Thirwall castle where we had lunch. From here we followed the Hadrian's Wall Path all the way back to Gilsland. I think it would be agreed by all that this was the more 'stilish' part of the walk. The weather forecast was wrong !!!
