Walk 140 Report, 13 September 2009

36 walkers enjoyed this 6.5 mile walk in glorious sunshine.

Annan Walking Group on the Cumbria Coastal WayStarting from the Lifeboat Station car park in Silloth the walk followed a mixture of the Cumbria Coastal Way and Allerdale Ramble to Skinburness via the Cote lighthouse and on to Grune Point where a leisurely lunch was taken sitting along the grassy banks which border Moricambe Bay and the Skinburness salt marsh. The Pillbox at Grune Point proved of interest to the walkers especially on hearing the story concerning the memorial cairn which has been erected on the roof of the Pillbox.

From Grune Point we walked back towards Silloth once again using the Allerdale Ramble path. On reaching the edge of the 36 acres of grassy open space simply known as ‘The Green’ we turned to walk along Criffel Street and viewed Silloths Millennium Memorial with its clay plaques indicating all the schools, clubs and other organisations associated with the town. From here it was a simple stroll across ‘The Green’ back to our start point and a well deserved ice cream.

A fine days walking which was greatly enhanced by the weather and the glorious views across the Solway.
