WALK (110) REPORT, Sat 24 May
From the village of Armathwaite, which was originally a Viking settlement, the walking group crossed the river Eden via an impressive 4 arched 18th. century sandstone bridge into Coomb Woods.
Coomb Woods is a well managed woodland containing Japanese Larch, ScotsPine and Douglas Fir amongst others. Ascending the broad track which was an old timber extraction road, we passed an 'Eden Benchmark', one of ten sculptures set up along the banks of the Eden, as part of the Millenium celebrations. As we climbed higher, through the trees we could see magnificent views of the Eden valley.
As we emerged from the woods we were met by glorious sunshine which continued the rest of the walk.
We proceeded along country roads and tracks and past old sandstone cottages and through Bascodyke Head farm, with its fine crop of rusted, organic tractors and cars !!
On reaching the village of Ainstable,we carried on up to the village church, where we had lunch. After lunch we proceeded across open fields and along lanes to the banks of the Eden and eventually to Armathwaite where some of us enjoyed liquid refreshments.
