Heirtage and history
The town of Annan and Annandale have strong historical links with the Bruce family. In the 13th century they were Lords of Annandale and would have occupied the town's fortified motte and bailey. Annan's location on a principal fordable crossing of the Solway Firth gave it strategic importance and it was destroyed many times in attack and counter attack during and after the war of independence.

Annan Bruce Statue Heritage Project

The Annan Bruce Statue Project has been established to advance the acquisition of a statue of King Robert the Bruce to be placed on the front of Annan Town Hall.

LATEST GOOD NEWS (June 2008)
An award of £2,000 has been made by Magnox North Chapelcross through its community support fund. This generous support from a company with strong local roots is much appreciated. This and the ongoing support of many others, including customers of Somerfield’s Store brings the total raised to over £31,000. With a final fund raising push it is now hoped that a commission can be placed in the next few months and the Statue erected by this time next year!

ANNAN BRUCE STATUE PROJECT: COMMISSION ADVERT (PDF file, 12kb)

We are asking for assistance from local businesses, groups and individuals for donations and fundraising.

The realisation of this ambition would complement work already planned and funded to create a regional Bruce Trail and to renovate and improve the presentation of the 12th century Motte and Bailey (see Heritage and History). The Brus Stane can also be seen in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall.

It is proposed that the statue should be commissioned by competition from an artist able to create a dynamic portrayal of the King and a sense of movement. The statue would be cast in bronze.

King Robert the Bruce in Annan and Annandale

When our Town Hall was built in 1878 a plinth was provided for a statue of a prominent local figure but has remained empty. The plinth has been surveyed and it would make an excellent base for the statue.

The Statue together with the ongoing Townscape Heritage Initiative work and the other projects mentioned above will help to generate interest and pride in the town with consequent benefits for the local business economy and the wider community.

Make a Donation!

To date in less than eight months of active fund raising the support of those listed below together with that of the many individuals too numerous to mention has brought us within sight of our target. It has been a truly remarkable response. Will you please help us with the final push.

We are confident that with your support we can commission the work within the next few months and see it erected next year, hopefully by the end of May 2009 thereby tying in with planned local events to mark "The Year of Homecoming" and the towns annual celebration of the Riding of the Marches. If you can assist please complete the attached form (PDf file, 55kb) and return it to the Project Committee care of Annan Museum (address on Form).
