The competition is designed to celebrate the glorious countryside of Annandale and Eskdale in south west Scotland - from seascapes to rolling hills, pastoral riversides to townscapes.

British Arts: Resource for the Arts

Sixty artists, professional and amateur, experienced and novice visited our beautiful part of Scotland in June to paint a picture for entry into an open competition with a cash prize of £1,000.

People from as far away as Fort William and Cumbria travelled to the area to capture its beauty - view all of the 2007 paintings >>

Tony Peart pictured with his daughter and painting Annan artists Jack O'Hara and Stewart Alexander Gemmell scooped Best Painting by a Local Resident and Best Work Featuring Chapelcross.

Other winners included lecturer at Cumbria Institute for the Arts, Tony Peart (pictured with his daughter and painting on right) in his first ever competition. He produced an atmospheric painting of The Solway Plain looking down from Swordwell to claim the £1000 open prize.

Runner-up in the Open Competition went to Tom J Henry while Sue Llewellan won Most Positive Image of Annandale and Eskdale.

Youngsters Theo Hussey and Indi Allen-Henderson also got into the act scooping the 10-16 Age Group and Under 10.

Judging the Painting ChallengeOn behalf of the organisers Annan Initiative's Alan Thomson said

"We were pleased to welcome so many people to the area and were pleased to see so many families take part."

According to the judges (pictured on right), despite the weather conditions, competitors produced some of the best paintings to date.
