Fishing in south west Scotland
SEA FISHING METHODS
The
Solway Firth at Annan is fished for salmon, trout and sea trout
by a variety of methods- some of which date back to the Burgh
Royal Charters of 1538 and 1612.
The fishermen use fixed nets
- Poke nets, and Stake nets and Haaf nets. The Haaf net which
also rests on the sea bed is supported by a fisherman.

Drift
netting or "Whammeling" salmon is not now allowed
but trawling for shrimps and mussel dredging takes place.
ROD FISHING
The
River Annan is a scenic river with good fishing. The
salmon run in the spring, but like most other rivers, this
run
is declining. The grilse run in the summer and to hook
a 5-7 lbs. "bar of silver" is an unforgettable
experience. The sea trout and herling can also give endless
sport. The autumn sees the run of big fish and you may
be lucky to either catch or at least see the massive
20-30 lbs. grey backs. For variety and excitement the
river Annan
is second to none.
Anglers
are also attracted to Kelhead Water and other adjacent
waters which have chub, pike and several other types of
coarse fish.
